The Art of Slowing Down with Carie Garrett

Carie Garrett
In our fast-paced, multi-tasking world the notion of slowing down and doing less seems ludicrous. We’ve got so much to do that we think we’ve got to speed up to keep up. Speeding up not only fatigues our nervous systems, but it leaves us feeling stressed-out, fatigued, depleted, exhausted, depressed, dis-spirited, and dis-eased. What’s needed is not more speeding up, but rather a slowing down and doing less, so that we can restore and replenish ourselves.
Join Carie Garrett for this workshop on the art of slowing down and doing less. Give yourself permission to let the busy-ness fall away for a little while, as you begin to reclaim your energy and your essence. We’ll explore meditation techniques designed to help you slow down and find your center. We’ll find the wisdom in working with our minimum edges in super slow, gentle movements designed to open your body in the tight places. We’ll incorporate lots of lying down poses using the wall, and and we’ll wind down with some good, long restorative poses where your body is supported with props. You’ll leave feeling deeply re-connected, rejuvenated, and joyously YOU again. This workshop is appropriate for all levels of experience.
Carie Garrett is a senior teacher of Los Angeles-based yoga master Erich Schiffmann. Since 2001 she has worked extensively with Schiffmann as his apprentice and teaching assistant at workshops, retreats, and teacher trainings throughout the country. Carie teaches a fluid and creative practice based on inner listening, self-trust, and intuitive alignment. Her unique teaching style weaves together a love of innovative movement from a dance background and a strong knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology from 25 years as a group exercise instructor. Her classes are spontaneous, fun, outside the box, and reflect her passion and real-life experiences of living the yoga in the world on a daily basis. Carie teaches Freedom Style Yoga classes in College Station, Texas, and workshops and retreats both state and nation-wide. For more information, visit: www.cariegarrett.com.
Guided Meditation & Energy Share for the Community (Wednesday, 7:30-8:30pm; 3rd Wed of every month - see calendar for upcoming dates: next date is March 21)

Personal Development Workshops:
These workshops consist of various topics related to developing your own personal wellness practices including strengthening intuition, creating mindfulness in daily life, understanding your own strengths and skills to live and create joyfully. See below for upcoming personal development workshops:
- Developing Your Intuition: The Basics, April 7 (Saturday), Noon to 2:30pm, $45/participant (Led by Lisa Tauferner): The concept of intuition is to look within for learning, a natural skill that we can drown out when our emotions distract us and our mind-body connection is not strengthened. Intuition is an excellent skill to cultivate in providing clarity of thinking, decisiveness, and mindful action in one’s life. This basic workshop on developing intuition will introduce participants to the concept of intuition as an innate ability that can be strengthened through simple and basic exercises to cultivate mind-body awareness and mastery of our emotions. Participants will be provided resources that they can use on their own to help strengthen their own intuitive awareness. This workshop is a good basis for further intuition development that will be offered later through other personal development workshops. Space limited – sign up online by February 17.
- Developing Your Intuition: Next Steps, April – Date TBA, $75/participant (Led by Lisa Tauferner): Building upon concepts learned in the Basics class on developing your intuition, this class will help participants deepen their understanding of how intuition can be utilized and guided accordingly. Through various exercises that cultivate the neutral/objective mind required for better reception to listening to one’s intuition, participants will be able to practice using their intuition in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Resources will be provided so that participants can practice on their own and feel greater guidance in trusting intuition as a daily tool. This workshop is recommended for those who have taken the “Basics” workshop. Space limited – sign ups accepted day prior to workshop or until full.

Therapeutic Yoga Workshops: Yoga is an ancient practice that involves more than just stretching and moving the body to become more physically fit. It develops a calmer mind, open heart, and with regular practice, a deeper release of physical and emotional limitations that prevent us from reaching our full potential. Different from our drop-in yoga classes, our therapeutic yoga workshops are designed to provide for those seeking more in-depth information about various yoga styles and yoga’s therapeutic benefits, yoga workshops ease you into a deeper appreciation of this ancient art of healing. See below for upcoming yoga workshops:
- Caring for Your Back, March 31 (Saturday), 10:30am to 12:30pm, Cost: $45 per participant: Managing back pain and maintaining a healthy back are the most common reasons why people are encouraged to begin a yoga practice or continue an existing yoga practice. A recent study on Iyengar yoga’s effects on chronic low-back pain conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) reported: “… yoga decreases functional disability, pain, and depression in people with chronic low-back pain.” Led by certified and registered yoga instructor, Lisa Tauferner, this workshop will explore the anatomy of the back and movement of it within therapeutic yoga practices. Combining her training and expertise in Hatha, both Iyengar and Viniyoga styles, Lisa will offer participants a holistic understanding of how to care therapeutically for the back using these supportive yoga practices. Participants will have a greater understanding of the anatomy of spinal movement and the related musculature systems supporting the back, and, in turn, know how to use yoga to care for their own backs in a gentle and supportive manner.
